V18.132 Application for registration

Part V18 Insurance Premium Tax

Regulations made under FA 1994, s 53(6)1 provide that an insurer must register in the form and manner required by HMRC. Registration applications are to be made using the online form through the Government Gateway. An insurer unable to use the online form can print and post Form IPT12.

Lloyd's Syndicates or those wishing to use an agent to deal with their IPT affairs can only use the paper IPT1 form.

Where an insurance business is a partnership each partner will be jointly and severally liable for all IPT obligations and liabilities. If the insurer is a partnership Form IPT2 should be completed as well3 and all partners need to sign the form. Forms can be obtained from the IPT helpline (0300 200 3700).
