Authorisation to work in Austria is not required from citizens of:
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý EU member states
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý EEA member states (ie EU plus Iceland Norway and Liechtenstein)
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý Swiss nationals
However, they must request a residence card (Aufenthaltskarte). After five years of continuous lawful residence in Austria, a permanent residence card (Daueraufenthaltskarte), which also serves as an identity document, can be issued.

Citizens of third countries require a combined work and residence permit called a Red-White-Red Card. The Red-White-Red Card is issued for a period of 24 months and entitles the holder to fixed-term settlement and employment by the employer specified in the application.
Individuals are eligible for a Red-White-Red Card if they belong to one of the following groups:
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý very highly qualified workers
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý skilled workers in shortage occupations (the list for 2024 can be found at gv.at)
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý other key workers
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý graduates of Austrian universities
