Maximum probationary period

In 2023, a member of the parliamentary assembly, known as the States Assembly, tabled a proposition to prevent probationary periods extending beyond six months or being extended more than once. Similarly, the proposition contended that any employee on a fixed-term contract of six months or less will not be subject to a work probation period. This was followed by a statement tabled in January 2024 by the Minister of Social Security. As such, probationary periods are subject to review and should be reviewed carefully. Ordinarily, a probation period lasts between three and six months; this to be specified in the employment contract.

Minimum notice

The statutory minimum notice period applicable to an employee will depend upon his length of service and it is common for the contractual period to be longer in any event, particularly for senior staff within the financial services industry who will often have contractual notice periods of six months or longer.
