2.2.1 Social security rates and withholding

Membership of the social security system

The Norwegian social security is often referred to as the national insurance and the system and is administered by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).

Norwegian residents (individuals staying, or intending to stay, in Norway for at least 12 months) usually join the social security scheme from their date of entry to Norway, unless they remain under their home country system by agreement (6.1). Once a member, the individual can stay abroad for up to 12 consecutive months and remain a member if:

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý there is no social security agreement with the country in which the individual is working

  2. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý the individual works for a Norwegian employer

  3. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý the stay is intended
