The employee is entitled to time off for the entire period of sickness. A self-certification note given to the employer normally applies to sick leave of no more than three days. A medical certificate from a physician is needed for longer sick leave periods.
State sick pay applies from day one if an employee is unable to work due to illness or injury. The employer must pay the employee their sick pay from the first day, and (where applicable) 16 days later. The employer is responsible for payment during this sick pay period, after which the state pays it for up to one year.
