9.9 Work residence permits

Portugal

When an employer intends to hire a foreign worker to work and live in Portugal, there are different procedures to follow if the employee is an EU national or non-EU national.

EU national

An EU national is allowed to live and work (as an employee or a self-employed worker) in Portugal with a simple EU citizen registration certificate. This certificate allows them to live and work for five years in Portugal and after five years, they must obtain a residence permit for EU nationals in the competent Portuguese immigration authority.

Family members of EU nationals who are not EU nationals themselves must obtain a residence permit at Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) in order to live and work in Portugal.

Non-EU nationals

Non-EU nationals, who are legally resident in another EU country, and employed by a company in another EU country, do not require a residence or temporary stay visa to enter Portugal when they are posted to Portugal, as per Regulation on Entry,
