The main purpose of a will in the United States is to pass the assets that are owned in an individual's name at the time of death. In addition, the will names the personal representative for the estate and can be used for the appointment of guardians for any minor children.
The laws governing the lodging of a valid will are determined on a state-by-state basis. The applicable state law will be the jurisdiction in which the Will is made and executed. In general:
