9.2 Work visas

In order for someone who is not an Australian or a New Zealand citizen to work in Australia, they need an Australian visa relevant to the work they intend to perform. A large variety of short stay, temporary and permanent work visas are available.

A short stay visitor visa permits a business visitor to:

  1. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý make general business or employment enquiries, investigate

  2. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý negotiate

  3. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý sign or review a business contract, undertake an activity as part of an official government visit, take part in a conference, trade fair or seminar. The organisers cannot pay the individual to take part.

Business visitors cannot work for or provide services to a person, business or organisation, sell goods or services to the public.

Generally speaking, the Federal Government's policy regarding employer sponsored visas is that job opportunities for Australian workers take priority with overseas workers complementing rather than displacing Australian workers.
