9.2 Work permits

Canada

There are two types of work permit in Canada:

  1. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý an employer-specific work permit, and

  2. Ìý

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý an open work permit

An open work permit allows the individual to work for almost any employer in Canada. Further information and how to apply for such a permit can be found at Work permit: About the process.

Once in Canada it is also possible to apply to change the conditions of your work permit or to renew it.

Family open work permits

Family Open Work Permits (OWPs) are restricted to spouses of foreign workers in TEER 0 or 1 occupations, or specific TEER 2 or 3 occupations facing labour shortages or aligned with government priorities (see below on labour market impact assessment). Eligible sectors include natural
