1.1ÌýÌýÌýÌý Introduction: overview of the domestic payroll system
The Republic of Kenya (Jamhuri ya Kenya) is in Sub-Saharan Africa with an attractive base for business expansion in Africa.
English and Swahili are the official languages of Kenya, but more than 60 languages are spoken. The currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).
Kenya is part of the East African Community (EAC) comprising:

The EAC is headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania.
The EAC treaty applies from 7 July 2000, and Kenya was one of the original partner states. The EAC treaty's aims are a customs union, a common market, and a monetary union with common currency. It was originally envisaged that this would be achieved by 2023, but progress has been slow.
