1.1ÌýÌýÌýÌý Introduction: overview of the domestic payroll system
The Federal Republic of Nigeria was a British colony until 1960 and retains English as its official language. Over 520 local languages are spoken. Although Abuja is the country's capital, Lagos is the largest city. Abuja and surrounding areas are included in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
The Nigerian currency is the Naira (NGN or ₦). The economy is primarily based on the oil industry, but half of the population work in agriculture, including rubber and cocoa and other sectors.
Nigeria is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The 15 member countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
The key ECOWAS employment rights are in the ECOWAS General Convention on Social Security. This covers migrant workers working between the ECOWAS member states, their family members and their survivors.
