The National Insurance Board of Trinidad and Tobago (NIBTT) administers a provident fund for workers, enabled through income derived from compulsory contributions made by employees and employers. Established by National Insurance Act 35 of 1971, the scheme was brought on stream on 10 April 1972, and so this year marks its 51st anniversary.
NIBTT benefits
For persons who register and pay contributions to the National Insurance System, the fund pays 23 types of benefits across seven categories as follows:
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý Sickness – paid to insured persons between the ages of 16 and 65 who are incapable of working because of sickness or are suspected of having a contagious disease
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý Maternity
- Ìý
- Ìý
–ÌýÌýÌýÌý Maternity – paid to insured women between the ages of 16 and 65 who are away from work as a result of pregnancy
- Ìý
–ÌýÌýÌýÌý Special Maternity Grant – payable to the spouse of an insured man where that spouse is 16 years or older, and unable to qualify for the Maternity Benefit in her own right
