C3.1808 Miscellaneous CGT exempt gains

Capital gains tax

The following gains arising in defined circumstances are treated as exempt gains:

Exempt gainCommentary
Private residenceGains arising in respect of a dwelling house which has at any time been the owner's sole or main residence are wholly or partly exempt (see Division C3.17)1.
Foreign currencyA gain is not a chargeable gain if it accrues on the disposal by an individual of currency of any description acquired by them for their personal expenditure outside the UK. This includes the expenditure of family or dependants. It also includes expenditure on the provision or maintenance of any residence outside the UK. In addition, individuals, trustees and personal representatives are exempt from gains made on withdrawals from foreign currency bank accounts (see C1.608)2.
Decorations for valourNo chargeable gain arises on the disposal of a decoration awarded for valour or gallant conduct, unless it was acquired by the disposer for a consideration in money or money's worth3.
