Stamp duty land tax (SDLT) applies in England and Northern Ireland and is payable only on transactions involving the acquisition of an interest in land1 for consideration2. Consideration given directly or indirectly by someone who acquires a chargeable interest in land3, or by a connected person, is subject to the tax4. Specifically, consideration includes the assumption of debt5.
Transfers for no consideration are in general not chargeable to SDLT6, but other parts of the SDLT code may over-ride this basic provision.
SDLT will therefore most likely be encountered together with IHT where there is a sale of land
