Notice to file a trust tax return
An HMRC officer may issue a notice to any relevant trustee (see above) requiring them to make a return, known as the SA900, containing information (specified in the notice) to establish the amounts chargeable to income tax and capital gains tax on, and the income tax payable by, the settlement's trustees, the settlor(s) and beneficiaries1.
The notice may also require the trustee to provide accounts, statements or other documents relating to information in the return2.
HMRC may issue a notice to any one trustee or may issue separate notices to such other trustees as they see fit3.
The trustees must include the net amounts in the return, ie after taking account of any reliefs or allowances for which a claim is made and after giving credit for any tax deducted at source4. Before 2016/17, this included tax credits on company dividends.
