On 20 October 1984 the Convention on the law applicable to trusts and their recognition was adopted in draft form by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The Recognition of Trusts Act 1987 incorporated into the body of UK law most of the 1984 Hague Convention (set out in the Schedule to the Act), with effect from 1 August 19871. Of the 32 member states whose delegates adopted the draft Convention, the UK2, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and Malta have so far ratified it3.
