E3.501 Child trust funds—overview

Child trust funds were introduced by the Child Trust Funds Act 2004 (referred to in this Division as CTFA 2004)1. All matters under CTFA 2004 are under the care and management of HMRC2. Child trust funds were introduced as a new form of savings and investment account for children in the United Kingdom born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, and for whom either child benefit had been awarded, or other conditions (considered below) were met. There was an initial government contribution3 to the child's account, with a further payment (the supplementary contribution) for children in low income families4.
