SEIS reinvestment relief is a relief from capital gains tax (CGT) that individuals can claim where they realise capital gains on disposals of assets in a tax year (from 2012/13 onwards), and in that same year claim relief for investments that qualify for SEIS income tax relief (see E3.801)1.
An overview of SEIS reinvestment relief
If an individual disposes of an asset that would gives rise to a chargeable gain, and reinvests all or part of the amount of the gain in shares which qualify for SEIS income tax relief, some of the amount reinvested may be exempted from CGT2.
If the original gain on the disposed asset accrues in 2012/13 then 100% of the amount reinvested in SEIS shares may be exempted from CGT.
If the original gain accrues in 2013/14 onwards then 50% of the amount reinvested in SEIS shares may be exempted from CGT3.
