E5.201 Children—introduction

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for the general purposes of income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax and inheritance tax, age of majority is attained at 18. References to minors, infants or similar expressions are to be construed accordingly in all statutory provisions1.

In Scotland, equivalent rules are found in the Age of Majority (Scotland) Act 1969 which states that formal majority is reached at the age of 18. Subject to some limited exceptions, any person aged 16 years or over
