Formal presentations strike fear in to the heart of many, but there are a whole host of things you can do to make things easier. This Practice Note sets out some hints and tips.

Over-prepare

Get your information right, but don’t be too constrained by a script. Have a summary (bullet point PowerPoint/cue cards) to talk to, so that you don’t forget key areas, but don’t get too focussed on the word for word delivery—then it can sound too robotic.

Focus your energy

Some people, when racked with nerves, stay totally motionless, fixed to the ground, with their arms at the side or their hands fiddling with jewellery. Learn to harness the energy in a positive way. It’s good to have some adrenaline, and it’s inevitable—that’s what creates some interest in what you’re saying, but use it well. Be relaxed but move around, be animated and create something interesting to look at.

Smile

So often people
