Article summary

In an attempt to reduce recidivism rates, the Justice Secretary, David Gauke, has announced a plan to place offenders on the path to employment from the moment they enter prison. The major policy intervention seeks to cut the £15bn annual cost of reoffending to the UK economy. The announcements coincides with the publication of research from the USA which suggests that temporary release from prison is an effective way to improve offenders’ reoffending and employment outcomes.
